Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken - Rausch Kabinett 2017

This time in the glass is a Riesling Kabinett from the Saar. From the winery Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken the Rausch from 2017.

For the first time in a glass I had this wine 2018 at Mythos Mosel. Although it was of course still super young at that time, it made quite an impression and I put a bottle of it in the cellar. The curiosity how it developed after about 1.5 years in the cellar was stronger than the will to allow it to mature even more. Besides, it is Advent and I think Kabi fits also in December.

The nose is incredibly fresh, lots of freshly pressed grape juice, pear, apple. This is exactly what I was excited about at the first encounter and the time in the cellar has taken none of it away. In the mouth the wine has a crisp acidity, like from green apples. This is also what provides the necessary counterpart to the fruit and sugar. Almost 60 grams of sugar are in it after all and yet nothing is heavy or full-bodied. Sharp as a knive with an extreme drinking flow. And all this happens in the mouth and nose from the first moment of uncorking until the glass is empty. With air a little depth is added, some honey, the aroma becomes a little darker. The acidity, however, continues to cut through the glass. This is a lot of fun.

On the second day there is yellow apple instead of green apple, the wine seems fuller. Especially the minerality is more pronounced. But the freshness easily holds up against it. This is certainly one of my Kabinett highlights so far. For me it is a complete wine, the drinking pleasure, the freshness, the clear, clean fruit and behind everything there is a beautiful depth and length. You can certainly do that differently, but I don’t know if you can do it much better.
